Focus Ares:
Day 1 was dedicated to establishing complete shared ownership and understanding of the new 5-Year Strategic Plan (SP), followed by grounding the Board in its foundational governance duties. The session began by meticulously unpacking CHAFO's 2025-2030 Strategic Plan, starting with a detailed review of the Vision ("Healthy and thriving communities...") and Mission ("To improve the health and well-being...") to ensure full alignment. The core of the morning focused on the three major Strategic Priorities (Vision Realization, Institutional Strengthening, and Strategic Partnerships), where Board members reviewed the high-level goals and how their oversight role directly connects to achieving measurable community health impact over the next five years. This discussion included reviewing the Core Values (Health, Equity, Transparency) and linking them to operational ethics.
The afternoon transitioned to the Basics of Good Governance, a critical module emphasizing the distinction between the Board's function (oversight, setting policy, fiduciary duty) and the Executive Director's role (day-to-day management and execution). This section covered legal responsibilities, board member fiduciary duties, ethical decision-making, and the importance of Transparency and Accountability—a core value essential for maintaining donor and community trust in Malawi. The final session involved a comprehensive review of the CHAFO Board Members' Charter. This was a practical exercise to formalize expectations regarding commitment, term limits, attendance policies, conflict of interest declarations, and internal protocols, ensuring every member understands the legal and ethical framework guiding their service to the organization. The day concluded with clear action points on integrating the SP's priorities into future committee work.
